First, you have to look at the entire pool of candidates. Decide what your "must-haves" are and your "absolutely cannot have". So, we wandered around various neighborhoods in Sydney, trying to decide whether we wanted to live there or not. We found some not-so-great neighborhoods, and some really great neighborhoods.
Then, we thought we really liked Surry Hills and Newtown--and concentrated our search in that area. Newtown has some great, funky shops and restaurants. Surry Hills is a bit fancier--but within walking distance to the CBD. We thought we would be happy in either place. But we hadn't found an apartment unit that we really liked.
And then, we decided to check out a new neighborhood: Pyrmont. It is within walking distance to the CBD--just across a cool pedestrian bridge that goes across the Darling Harbour. There were fancy shops and restaurants. And two nice grocery stores. And is the site of the monthly farmer's market.
We were smitten.
Forget about Surry Hills and Newtown. Let's find a place in Pyrmont! Who cares if we can only afford a one-bedroom and we'll be smooshed in our apartment. (For those of you who are coming to visit, we'll make room. Don't worry. It just might be a little cramped.)
And we found a place. It is everything we want. But, will they accept us? Will they approve our application?
We wait to hear a call back, nervously and anxiously. Please, please, please.
