Okay, so I read Eating Animals over a year ago--some time before Elie was born (which was almost a year ago!). But I am reminded of it because I just read this opinion ("How Not to be Alone") from Jonathan Safron Foer. Go ahead, click the link and read it--it's good.
Anyway, Fede and I went to see Jonathan Safron Foer in Sydney at this wonderfully named event: Festival of Dangerous Ideas. (Isn't the name of the festival great? It makes you want to attend, doesn't it?) Foer talked about some of the things he learned while researching the book, Eating Animals, and then I decided to read it.
He begins the book by explaining that when he learned he was going to become a father, he and his wife were undecided about whether to feed their children meat. So, he decided he wanted to make an informed decision--and he did some research and wrote this book.
Not to go into the gory details--because they are pretty disgusting--Foer ultimately determines that NOT eating animals is much preferable. I have to admit, immediately after reading the book, I felt sick thinking about eating meat as well. But time passes, and my memory fades, and I'm now back to eating meat without dwelling on it.
But every so often, I am reminded of how horrible the practices of the meat industry are. I know that I should try to find good sources of meat--probably the farmers markets would be good. But honestly, who knows? I'm not about to go onto a farm to see how animals are slaughtered and butchered before the meat ultimately ends up in my kitchen. So, I will just eat less meat, and hope for the best.
