This is part who-knows-which in the Michael Henson’s saga of the N.A.V.S.A. universe by Claudia Silva Armas (not available anywhere, maybe upon request). The story is about a kid that is a cross between a merman and a vampire that was genetically created by the United States Army (?) to be a soldier.
In the first part of the story the boy is in captivity by some branch of the army that didn’t get enough budget to build a water tank to train him, so they have to go at midnight to SeaWorld to borrow one of their tanks (?). Eventually, word gets out that this creature exists and that Michael is in fact his biological father.
The next part involves the NAVSA folks organizing a rescue party to go get the boy. If you haven’t read any NAVSA books this is going to be very confusing because there’s a big cast of inter related characters that are barely introduced. Adam is quickly saved and brought to an island where he finally feels like he is at home.
Finally, there is a battle sequence, where the army discovers the location of the island and attacks it to get back the merfolk. There is some action where the characters get to display their unique abilities until they defeat the opponent. Adam gets to stay with his new family, and so the NAVSA universe keeps growing.
If you have seen Lost, the ending will feel very familiar.
