I can count the number of Aussies I've met on one hand

Okay, that is a bit of an exaggeration. I need two hands.

• The building managers of our apartment complex are Aussies (2).
• Fede's boss is an Aussie (1).
• The guy who installed our cable was an Aussie (1).
• I have met three Aussies in business school (3).
• I went to a Spanish exchange meetup yesterday and met another Aussie (1).

It actually surprises me how rarely I meet an Aussie. I'm not including restaurants or stores--although often we are served by someone who is not an Aussie. I'm only thinking about people I've met and talked with for more than 5 minutes.

I had expected more people in business school to be Aussie. But I think my school really caters to overseas students. (I will have to tell you guys later about the strange Certificate of Professional Development program that I'm required to go to as a full-time student. The program is definitely targeted to the students from non-Western countries.)

Then, I had an interesting conversation with the Aussie I met at the Spanish exchange meetup. (We were very good at the beginning and only spoke broken Spanish. But towards the end, we wanted to have a real discussion and had to use English.) According to Mark, Australian companies do not like to train people, they would rather import skilled people. He is a biologist, and out of the 15 people he works with, there are only 3 Aussies.

That sounded strange to me. But then I remembered talking with another student in the MBA program. She is German, and works for an American drug company--which has an office in Germany and in Sydney. She got transferred to the Sydney office, and she says that in her team of 9 people, all of them were foreigners (and not from the US).

Anyway, I hope to meet more Aussies, because I would really love to learn more about this country--and to do so, I think I really need to talk to more Aussies. Where are they?
