hunger

I have been volunteering with The Hunger Project since June. They essentially train people to learn how to be more active in their community, so that the community together finds a way to end their own hunger. They have partnered with another organization called hike4hunger, which seeks to bring more awareness to the problem of hunger around the world.

Yesterday, Fede and I did a bushwalk with hike4hunger--out in the Royal National Park. There was a group of about 10 of us. Our starting point was Garie Beach.

When we first got there, it started raining. While we were waiting for the others to show up, it stopped raining. So, although we had a late start, at least we didn't have to walk in the rain.

See that cliff in the background? We were headed to the top of that.

But first, Fede and I dipped our toes into the Pacific Ocean. Then it was time to climb up the cliff.

The view looking back was gorgeous.

The path was sometimes rocky.

A lot of it was flooded. Fede was very good at being able to pick the spots so his feet stayed dry. Others in our group just gave up and walked in soggy sneakers.

I liked how much our path changed during the walk. First sand, then rocks, then more sand at the top of the cliff, then a metal grid, then flat rock, etc. The only bad thing was that my neck hurt a bit from staring at the ground in order to pick the right spot to put my foot on.

The vegetation was really short. Not like the usual tall trees, moss and shady forests in the Pacific Northwest.

I took a lot of pictures of the flowers. They are so different here.

We finally reached the prime spot on the hike: Eagle Rock.

Then, we walked some more.

I liked how the rocks were in layers.

Eventually, we made it to the end. It was only a 6 kilometer walk, and I have to admit that I'm a bit sore today. But, it was worth it.
