anxiously awaiting Mei-Mei

Marlene took this picture since she wanted to make sure that the gestational growth of Mei-Mei is being documented. I am 39 weeks pregnant--and we probably should have started taking pictures many weeks ago--but here I am. Mei-Mei, feel free to come out anytime.

I have been incredibly uncomfortable and cranky. It is 1:30 AM, and I cannot sleep. Probably the sleep deprivation is adding to my crankiness. And just generally being unable to find a position where this giant belly is not pressing on me in some awkward way. I wake up multiple times a night to use the bathroom--which obviously interrupts my sleep. The random practice contractions can be quite painful. And I am sporadically hormonal--sometimes crying or getting upset about things I know I normally wouldn't.

Needless to say, I am not one of those happy pregnant women.

Of course I know the pain will end soon enough and I will be so thrilled to finally meet Mei-Mei. A few days ago, I remembered that I had made a book of pictures of when Elie was first born. Elie sat next to me and we looked at these old pictures. And I was reminded of how sweet newborns are--when they are sleeping. Granted, I didn't take any pictures during the 2 AM crying marathons that Elie had. But I remembered how nervous I was, taking care of this little being who looked so fragile. I could never have imagined what that little, wrinkly, baby would become. Elie surprises me constantly--and I am sure Mei-Mei will be a similar surprise.

Mei-Mei, please come soon. Your old-fogey mama can only take so much physical pain. Not to mention your papa probably can take only so much crankiness from your mama.
