food in Hawaii

I don't think I have ever eaten so much food from styrofoam containers in three days. In fact, it has been awhile since I've received a styrofoam container--since Seattle banned it a couple years ago, and I don't know if it's banned in Sydney but none of our take-away containers are styrofoam.

I previously posted pictures of the pork adobo and kalua pig. Here is what I had for breakfast on Saturday, from the farmers market. Portuguese sausage, scrambled eggs, and kim chi fried rice. I love kim chi.

I also couldn't resist the kim chi sausage. Do you see the bits of kim chi (pickled cabbage) in the sausage?

Fede got the chorizo sausage on a stick--which wasn't really photogenic.

The young coconut we got looked good--but really didn't taste very coconut-y. We drank it quickly, since it is a bit of a pain to carry around.

Since we were at a farmers market, I felt compelled to get some fruit. The pineapple was incredibly sweet.

Fede decided to get some roasted corn.

We also got shaved ice. This isn't the size that we got--but I was impressed by how large they make them. Who can eat this much shaved ice?

On Friday night, we went to Zippy's, a Hawaiian fast food chain. It may not be the greatest food, but for fast food, it was pretty good.

Here is our very healthy meal of [a] fried mahi mahi (with rice and macaroni salad), [b] saimin (a noodle soup dish), [c] chili cheese fries (not Hawaiian, but Zippy's has pretty good chili), and [d] grilled cornbread (also not Hawaiian, but delicious).

Then, we had to go back an order Spam musubi. This is the only time I eat Spam. Somehow, I really like it with a cake of rice and some seaweed.

On another day, we had a "snack" at Shirokiya. The food court on the top level is so big, and we kept walking around it picking up things. Before we knew it, our "snack" became rather large...

The chuka buns reminded me of the little steamed buns you sometimes get when you eat Peking Duck. Instead of duck, though, it was pork.

The best meal we had was at Alan Wong. Sadly, I have no good pictures of the food from there, because I decided to bring the waterproof camera instead of our better camera. Of course, this proved to be a bad choice--since we never went in the water. It also proved to be a bad choice because Fede kept pestering me about how bad the waterproof camera is, and how I should have brought the better camera, and how he hates the waterproof camera, and how...

Mayu and Frank treated us to dinner at Alan Wong. They had told the restaurant that we were celebrating our wedding. So, the menu was personalized and said "Congratulations Sallie and Federico!" and we also got to make a wish with our dessert.

We are now recovering from having stuffed ourselves silly in Hawaii. But it was worth it.
